Stayton Area 2011 American Cancer Society Relay for Life

Stayton, Oregon – June 20, 2011 – The American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of Stayton Area gives everyone in the community a chance to help the organization save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Former and current cancer patients, those who have lost a loved one to cancer, families, businesses, faith-based and civic organizations, and anyone wanting to make a difference in the fight against cancer are invited to take part in this exciting team event. Relay For Life takes place from 6pm on July 15th until 12pm on July 16th at Regis High School.

The Relay for Life 2011 theme is “Seasons of Hope” with the Stayton Area goal set at $76,000.  To date, we have 301 participants, 40 teams and have over $42,000 raised with the numbers climbing daily.  This year’s events will include a silent auction, Luminaria Ceremony of Hope, Fight Back Ceremony, Mrs. Relay Contest and Zumba, just to name a few events.

Team fundraisers will be happening between now and the date of the event. For fundraising information, please visit http://www.relayforlife.org/staytonor and click on the “team fundraisers” tab.

Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay. Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups . . . people from all walks of life – all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.

SCTC Donates Funds to Local Schools

STAYTON – October 14, 2009 – Stayton Cooperative Telephone Company (SCTC) and Peoples Telephone Company (PTC) helped start the new school year on a positive note with cash donations to several local schools.  Donations this year totaled over $1700 to the North Santiam School District, the Cascade School District and to Regis High School.

The donations are a result of the “Schoolhouse Talk” long distance plan begun in February of 2003.  The plan allows local subscribers to designate a school district that will receive a donation from SCTC for every minute of long distance used by the subscriber.  To date, the plan has generated over $$10,000 that has been distributed to the schools.

This is one time where talk is not cheap since the more people talk; the more money goes to the schools.  Anyone interested in obtaining details about the Schoolhouse Talk Plan can call SCTC at 503-769-2121.

SCTC Lowers Prices and Adds Faster Internet Speeds

STAYTON – April 3, 2009 – Stayton Cooperative Telephone Company (SCTC) announced significant changes in their high-speed broadband Internet services today.

The changes affect all existing and future high-speed broadband Internet customers of the company, which also owns People’s Telephone Co. in Lyons, and SCS, serving parts of Aumsville.

For the customers who are currently served on the traditional copper-based facilities, the prices of the two available services will drop by $10.00 per month, effective on the April bill.  That’s a 20% - 25% decrease.  For the customers in Stayton and Sublimity who have recently been converted to state-of-the-art fiber optic facilities, the price won’t change, but the speed of the connection will increase by 250%.  Don Lawrence, President and CEO, said, “We are excited to be able to give our existing high-speed broadband Internet customers something special at this time.  It’s nice to be able to lower prices and increase choices during these trying economic times.”

The company began a monumental project of converting all of their customers to fiber optics in late 2008 and they predict that the efforts will go on for several years until it is completed.  As of the end of March, 2009, nearly 200 homes had been fully converted and plans call for well over 1000 to be done by the end of the year.  “We’re going to do this right,” said Dave Carpenter, Plant Manager, “It’s a complex process and we want to take the time necessary to serve our customers with the quality and reliability that they have come to expect from SCTC.”

Fiber optics is a technology that uses lasers to send digital signals through high-quality glass fibers instead of the traditional electrical analog signals through copper wire.  The service is called Fiber To The Home (FTTH) and it has the capacity to carry nearly unlimited amounts of data at speeds vastly faster than copper.  Customers can expect to get faster speeds at prices lower than previously expected, for example, a copper-based service at 1 Mbps (megabit per second) upload with 6 Mbps download costs $39.95 per month at the new, reduced price, while the much faster fiber service at 3 Mbps/15 Mbps costs only $10.00 more and is over two and a half times faster.
